Flat Glass - Lenoir Mirror is a coater, cutter and fabricator of flat glass. It is our primary raw material. Flat glass is a gas permeable, super-cooled liquid made from natural materials - primarily sand. We buy our flat glass from domestic sources.
Mirror - Lenoir Mirror produces its primary product by applying a reflective surface to flat glass. The process is chemical wet deposition. The flat glass substrate must have a silverable surface that is thoroughly cleaned. The series of steps in the process produce a reflective surface with protective backing that yields 90% reflectivity when viewed through the flat glass.
Post Fabrication Double Coat - On occasion, we receive requests for special protection on mirrors that may be installed in especially dangerous environments. In response to those requests, we have developed our “post fabrication double coat” mirror. This process ensures greater resistance to chemical attack by adding a second coat of protective paint after all fabrication is complete.
Cutting - A portion of the flat glass processed by Lenoir Mirror is purchased cut to size. The balance is cut internally. Whether the glass is cut at the float plant or in our operation, the cutting process is the same. The surface of the glass is scored by a titanium roller. The glass is then broken by placing mechanical or hand pressure along the score line. The process is the same for rectangles and shapes. The edge of the glass is clean cut until some form of fabrication is applied.
Pattern Cutting - Lenoir Mirror cuts both rectangles and shapes. Patterns for shapes can be transmitted in a hard copy or electronic form.
Edging - Lenoir Mirror fabricates edges for both utilitarian and aesthetic purposes. The edging process involves abrasive grinding and polishing. Edging eliminates the sharp clean cut edge. Edges can be ground to a rounded - pencil - or flat shape. The edges can be polished to various levels of clarity.
Beveling - Lenoir Mirror produces bevels on both straight line and shaped edges. Beveling is an abrasive grinding and polishing process that creates an angled surface around the perimeter of the glass/mirror. The angled surface begins at a distinct mitre line parallel to the edge of the product. The function of the bevel is decorative.
Grooves - Lenoir Mirror grinds grooves in glass for both decorative and functional purposes. Like the other fabrication processes, grooves involve abrasive grinding and , in some cases, polishing. The traditional plate or dish groove is ground parallel to the back edge of glass shelves. These are used for display purposes. Decorative grooves are ground in various patterns on glass/mirror surfaces for aesthetics.
Tape Backing - Lenoir Mirror applies a safety tape backing to mirrors primarily for protection in certain installations such as sliding and bi-fold mirror doors. The tape backing is applied in an adhesive pressure process. The tape backing is tested to meet Anszi Z97 specifications. Another type of tape backing is applied for use in shower doors.
Hole Drilling - Lenoir Mirror grinds holes in various diameters in glass/mirror. The function of the holes is for the attachment of hardware.
We apply these forms of fabrication to glass/mirror items individually or in combination. We offer a wide variety of specialty tinted glass and other surface applications such as frosting. For detailed questions, give us a call.
